Petition Action

If a petition gets 500,000 signatures it MUST BE put to a public referendum

Petition Details

Sometimes referred to as The popular initiative system which happens in countries like Switzerland, and is often seen to be more democratic.
- Allows citizens to suggest changes to the federal constitution
- All initiatives that gather 100,000 signatures in 18 months go to a public vote

Additional Information

-A constitutional amendment by initiative not only requires a majority public vote but a majority of cantons must also approve it
-Differs from the mandatory referendum, which is called by parliament and does not need public signatures.
I think that if a petition gets 500,000 signatures over a 6 month period (rather than 18 in Switzerland) then it should be put to the public to decide the outcome. If the petition in question can be resolved by referendum or if the petition is calling for one.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

There's already a petition about this issue. We cannot accept a new petition when we already have one about a very similar issue.

You are more likely to get action on this issue if you sign and share a single petition.
