Make political ads subject to the same strict code as products and services
Political campaigns are not governed by the Advertising Standards Authority.
Political parties can mislead, misinform and lie in the name of free speech. Democracy requires transparency, accuracy and trust. That trust is best earned when we know that our politicians, by law, cannot lie in ads.
According to the ASA. "For reasons of freedom of speech, we do not have remit over non-broadcast ads where the purpose of the ad is to persuade voters in a local, national or international electoral referendum. Complaints about political advertising should be made directly to the party responsible for that advertising."
In the UK, there is a longstanding ban on political advertisement on television, which is why the ASA only covers non-broadcast ads.
