Take the EU in/out decision to parliamentary vote.
The referendum result is not legally binding and the government is under no legal obligation to follow through with its outcome, it is advisory not mandatory. The country has now been split down the middle by age, class and region. An informed, elected parliament is more reliable than the misled.
