Anderson ~ EU ~ MP ~ Referendum ~ UK
Reform our parliamentary system in the wake of the UK's vote for independence.
One argument put forward by the Leave campaign was that the EU was undemocratic. This message undoubtedly struck a chord with many voters who feel disenfranchised. Yet Brexit will not solve this since our parliamentary system remains inherently unrepresentative for the following reasons:
- The House of Lords is unelected.
- First Past the Post is unrepresentative. UKIP (3881129) and Greens (1157613) needed vastly more voters per MP than Labour (40290) or Conservatives (34245) (https://www.opendemocracy.net/ourkingdom/liam-anderson/voters-per-mp-why-first-past-post-failed).
The following should happen before the next election:
- The House of Lords be replaced with an elected Second Chamber.
- A debate (and possible referendum) over the best voting system (PR, STV, AV+, FPTP).
