Make discrimination against homeless people a lawfully recognised hate crime
A hate crime is defined in British law as an act of violence or hostility directed at someone because of who they are yet homeless people are not covered by this law. We want new legislation to further prosecute people who commit hate crimes against homeless people.
One year 52% of homeless people suffered from violence (Source: Crisis). Whilst this in itself is a criminal offence it is not further punishable under the Criminal Justice Act 2003. We would also like to have police support and advice to be more widely available for homeless people. Many homeless people are afraid to report incidents to police and we would like change this.
