The Northern Ireland Secretary of State to order a Northern Ireland Border Poll
On the 23 June 2016, 56% of the population of Northern Ireland (NI) voted in United Kingdom European Union (EU) membership referendum to remain as part of the EU. Following the success of vote leave, the majority of the population of NI will now be required to leave the European Union
In accordance with the Northern Ireland Act 1998, Ch 47, Schedule 1, The Secretary of State may by order, direct the holding of a poll on a date specified in the order at any time that it appears likely that a majority of those voting would express a wish that NI should cease to be part of the United Kingdom.
As the majority of the population of NI has expressed a preference to be part of the EU, and are being forced out of the EU, this is an event that enables this poll to be ordered
