Petition Action

EU referendum 2: give 16 and 17 year olds the right to vote on their future.

Petition Details

The EU referendum result is undemocratic. Young adults in the UK were not able to vote on their future. There are 1.5million young people whose future has been decided by older generations who will not have to live with the consequences of this vote. Sign up for a second, democratic referendum.

Additional Information

The age profile of the referendum result (you gov poll) shows that 75% of Brits aged under 24 wanted to 'Remain' in the EU. Due to higher turn out of older people (predominantly over 65s) who voted 'Leave', the future of those most impacted by this vote is scewed by an age group that will not have to live with the consequences.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The EU referendum has already taken place. It is therefore no longer possible for the franchise (the groups of people who are entitled to vote) to be changed.

If you would like the UK voting age to be lowered to 16, you might like to sign this petition instead:
