Petition Action

Statements by politicians must be factually correct

Petition Details

Statements presented as facts by advertisers and the media must be factually correct, and regulation by the ASA and press watchdog results in inaccuracies being removed and/or corrected.

Politicians (sitting MPs, MEPs and candidates standing for election) must abide by the same principles.

Additional Information

This should apply to campaigns and campaign materials as well as during office, but need not apply to:

- Manifesto commitments (as these are promises, not facts, and are for the electorate to decide upon), or

- Opinions (which are not statements of fact, but it should be clear these are simply opinions).
