Following the Brexit vote, allow Scotland another Independence Referendum.
On the 23rd June, the UK voted to leave the European Union by 51.9%. Scotland, with a turnout of 67.2%, voted to remain part of the bloc with 62% of the vote. The SNP’s 2016 election manifesto stated that — in such a scenario — Scotland should be allowed a second independence referendum.
In the SNP’s manifesto for the Scottish Parliamentary elections, it stated that — should there be a “material change in circumstances”, such as Scotland being taken out of the EU against it’s will — the Scottish Parliament should be able to call another referendum.
To hold a legally binding referendum, the authority needs to be temporarily transferred to the Scottish Parliament, as the Edinburgh Agreement (2012) did for the 2014 referendum.
Only the UK Government can transfer that authority.
