Petition Action

Let UK citizens vote, regardless of how long they have lived outside the UK.

Petition Details

Some UK citizens were not permitted to vote in Brexit. This had far-reaching consequences, especially for those living in the EU. To the extent that the outcome of this referendum impacts many of our basic rights, we believe that our voices should be heard.
Allow us to vote in the next referendum.

Additional Information

Mother to three children born in France, I was born British, have only a British passport and still feel very much a citizen of my country.
Not being allowed to vote in the referendum due to the fact I have been outside the UK for more than 15 years seemed deeply unfair, as for me and many like me this is about our future and our children's futures too.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The Government has said that it does have plans to change this rule. It's therefore not clear what action you would like the Government to take that is different from what it is already doing.
