Preserve EU citizenship for all living UK citizens during EU negotiations.
Almost half of the referendum electorate voted to remain in the EU. It is morally wrong for this many people to be stripped of their EU citizenship against their will. Any negotiations for withdrawal should include provision to retain citizenship for all UK citizens who currently possess it.
Article 20 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union states that:
"Citizenship of the Union is hereby established. Every person holding the nationality of a Member State shall be a citizen of the Union. Citizenship of the Union shall be additional to and not replace national citizenship."
Rights aquired through EU citizenship include:
Voting in European elections
Voting in municipal elections
Accessing European government documents
Petitioning Parliament and the Ombudsman
Language rights
Right to free movement and residence
Freedom from discrimination on nationality
Right to consular protection
