A reasonable response to the riots
Criminality alone is not enough of an explanation.
Taking the hard line will not address the underlying problems in our society, and may make them worse.
We call for:
- A halt to benefits withdrawals to people convicted as a result of the riots;
- A halt to the eviction of convicted people and their families;
- Proportionate and consistent sentencing of offenders, in line with the sentencing guidelines;
- The government to abandon plans to suspend social media sites and impose curfews at times of unrest;
In addition to this, to improve the situation in the long term we also call for:
- The reversal of spending cuts to youth centres nationally, and the establishment of a central government fund to support this;
- The full reinstatement of the Education Maintenance Allowance.
