The government must delay invoking Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty
Once Article 50 has been invoked, the government has two years to negotiate terms of withdrawal with the EU. This is clearly not long enough to secure withdrawal on any terms that would be favourable to the UK and would likely require the most undemocratic parliamentary apparatus to achieve it.
Once invoked, Article 50 skews the balance of power in any negotiations in favour of the continuing EU member states. This is because of the two-year rule and the need for all the other Member States to agree unanimously to extend the deadline.
