Make it compulsory to vote in all elections and referendums in the UK.
Voting ensures that public policy broadly reflects the demands of the population. Yet elections are only able to achieve this if the views of the electorate accurately reflect those of the population.
When the wishes of the voting population differ too much from those of the citizenry at large, elections can no longer steer governments according to popular wishes.
Adding a small measure of compulsion to our electoral process could go a long way toward putting our political institutions back on an even keel and addressing the problem of growing political inequality.
