Petition Action

Introduce accountability for politicians and media for inflammatory language.

Petition Details

After appalling behaviour in the referendum I call on politicians and media to: Stop using emotive or inflammatory language that could incite fear, panic or hatred; Stick to the facts and be held accountable for inaccuracies; Stop trading insults and instead show how to debate issues with respect.

Additional Information

Newspapers continually produce headlines designed to shock rather than inform. The truth seems to be a secondary concern. Our politicians bicker like children and exaggerate - governing with fear rather than facts. It is having a negative impact on everyone - particularly vulnerable or impressionable people. You cannot fill a country with fear and hatred without consequences. The government and media must recognise their influence and change the manner in which they conduct themselves.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action. You could start a new petition explaining clearly how you think politicians and the media should be held to account.
