Offenders Criminal Damage Payments

Additional Information

People convicted of crimes involving criminal damage (such as the student riots, and the recent riots) should not only be given a sentence or community order but should be made to pay back the costs involved in the public disorder.
Estimates for all the damage, e.g. cars set on fire, shops smashed and looted, houses set on fire, loss of earnings, funeral costs, medical costs and extra policing costs etc. should be obtained by those that have been affected and sent to Government.
The total should be divided between all those found guilty (with a proviso to apply them at a later time after sentencing, when the total cost has been assessed) and ease the burden on the taxpayer.
Orders should be made to deduct the money from any wages earned, or from benefit being paid, over a period of time, (and if necessary by seizing and selling their possessions), no matter how long it takes to pay back.
Those who break the law must be made responsible for the costs involved.
