Debate a motion of no confidence in Mayor Sadiq Khan for subverting democracy

Petition Details

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has shown a refusal to accept the result of the UK's EU referendum, despite the resounding victory for 'Leave'.

Parliament should therefore debate a symbolic motion of no confidence for Sadiq Khan's failure to accept democracy.

Additional Information

A motion of no confidence can force a resignation. In 2009 the proposed vote of no confidence in the Speaker of the House of Commons forced the resignation of Michael Martin in the wake of the Parliamentary Expenses Scandal.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We can't accept this petition because it asks for something that neither the House of Commons nor the Government can do. The expression "vote of no confidence" is used when talking about a vote in the House of Commons which tests whether or not the Government of the day has the confidence of a majority of MPs in the House of Commons. That's why we allow petitions asking for a vote of no confidence in the Government or in individual Ministers.

The concept of the House having “confidence” in someone does not apply to the Mayor of London, who is accountable to the London Assembly.
