When a Prime Minister resigns a general election should be immediately announced
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is not elected directly, although the public is aware the current leader of the winning party will become PM. However when the sitting Prime Minister resigns the winning party chooses the next Prime Minister with little to no input from the general public.
