Debate whether to hold a general election prior to invoking Article 50.
The outcome of the EU referendum gives a mandate to the Prime Minister to begin negotiations on the UK’s exit from the EU; something which will impact on all UK citizens for decades to come. Yet, the electorate have not been consulted on the type of relationship they now wish to have with the EU.
The UK electorate should have a fresh opportunity to elect a government that represents their views and has a mandate to negotiate on their behalf.
The House of Commons should, therefore, debate whether it would be in the public interest to hold a general election prior to invoking Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty and whether the Fixed Term Parliament Act needs to be amended to allow this to happen.
