Parliamentary inquiry into deceitful claims to sway an election or referendum
The Brexit campaign dishonestly pledged £350 million per week for the NHS in full knowledge that this was was an impossibility. This is just one example of a growing trend in British politics.
There is a growing tendency for candidates to field statements that they know to be wrong merely to gain a vote for their party or themselves. Integrity is being eroded together with the high standards that once reflected British politics and decisions. Can a successful vote won on the basis of deceit be democratically or morally valid?
I believe that it is time to openly discuss this problem through the proper vehicle of a parliamentary enquiry into such practices.
