'Article 50' should only be invoked following a debate and vote in Parliament
Although the EU referendum has produced a decision to leave, the legal mechanism in order to do so is to invoke Article 50 of the Treaty of the Lisbon. There should therefore be a full debate and vote in Parliament before Article 50 is invoked, and Parliament should have oversight of this process.
Once invoked, Article 50 cannot be reversed. Therefore, the timing and and manner in which Article 50 is used is of critical importance to ensure an exit from the EU is as smooth as possible, and that the UK is left in the best possible position.
