Give the Electoral Commission power to ensure campaigns are clear and honest
The EU referendum highlighted the need for better regulation of campaigners. Claims such as the £350m per week being sent to the EU were roundly dismissed by experts and campaigners alike and shown to be at best misleading and, at worst, dishonest.
To help protect the public from being mislead, we feel that an independent body such as the Electoral Commission should have power to investigate and judge these claims, forcing those making them to retract them publicly and desist in their use. We already have similar regulatory bodies for advertising and the press, we feel that extending this to those campaigning in important political processes will better serve the British public, leading to increased respect for the political system.
