Petition Details

Companies can't advertise using false information, else they face large fines from the ASA, yet politicians can make claims and promises that are false, or they can't/don't keep without any liability. The Brexit campaign on both sides is a good example of this where misinformation was used liberally

Additional Information

Political advertisements are exempt from the advertising codes of conduct: https://www.cap.org.uk/Advertising-Codes/Non-Broadcast/CodeItem.aspx?cscid={00b85969-8e8f-4aaa-aa3e-3d1b3e49860b}#.V3EIC6JrZ6I

In June 2004, the Electoral Commission reported that, although the Committee on Standards in Public Life had urged the political parties to adopt a new code of practice, self-regulation by the political parties was unlikely to be achieved. Party political ads remain unregulated
