Recognise the supremacy of parliament on the nature of the EU membership.
The referendum result should be recognised as advisory. It should drive a deliberation of how our relationship with the EU shall be changed and not dictate the result given the immensity of the decision. Parliament is supreme and should not be bound or restricted by the referendum results.
Given,
1- the narrow margin between Leave and Remain in the EU referendum, and recognising the volatility of opinion as characterised in the polls, the complexity of the issues, the unpredictable outcome of Brexit, and misleading statements made during the campaign, and
2- the undoubted risks to the unity of the United Kingdom, its economic performance, security, trade, and impact to international relations,
responsibility must reside with parliament to determine the best course of action.
