Petition Action

Implement the Convention Providing a Uniform Law on the Form of an International Will

Additional Information

We, the undersigned, petition Her Majesty's Government to bring into force sections 27 and 28 of the Administration of Justice Act 1982 in order to implement the Washington Convention Providing a Uniform Law on the Form of an International Will.

The Washington Convention was designed to simplify the process of creating a will that can be considered validly executed in all countries in which a testator may have assets. This would reduce the need to execute multiple wills according to differing national laws about the form of execution.

Although Parliament has enacted the legislation needed to bring the UK into compliance with the Washington Convention, this legislation is yet to be brought into force. Many other signatories to the Washington Convention have implemented the necessary legislation so as to make the Convention part of their domestic law. It is time for the UK to do the same.
