Do not trigger article 50; inconclusive referendum result and subsequent events
The results of the referendum should be taken into account, but the decision to invoke article 50 should not be made based upon a simple majority vote. Our representatives should also consider:
- 2/4 countries in the UK & London voted, by majority, to remain
- Post referendum events
Only 37.5% of the electorate voted to leave, spread unevenly across demographics (e.g. age groups)
Events to consider:
- Pound dropping to a 31-year low
- £100s bns lost, downgrading the UK to the 6th-biggest economy
- Clear increase in risk of 2nd Scottish referendum
- Pledges made by the leave campaign have been withdrawn or discredited: £350m saved on EU membership is incorrect and may not be spent on the NHS; and prominent leave campaigners no longer foresee a change in immigration rules
