Extend the powers of the Electoral Commission to include false information
It has become evident that politicians can present factually incorrect and highly misleading information to the public in their arguments without repercussion. Politicians should be made accountable for the use of such information, as this undermines the quality of political debate and our democracy
There are three main examples of this in the EU Referendum:
- £350 million a week spend on the EU
- Leaving the EU could bring WW3
- The £350 million regained would be spent on the NHS
The Republic of Ireland and New Zealand have implemented similar rules, which can be used as case studies into the impact this would have on public debate, and how to implement a mechanism that would not negatively impact freedom of speech.
