Please stop using the phrase "the right honourable" in the House Of Commons

Petition Details

The EU referendum has shown that several MPs are quite happy to knowing mislead the general public with a tissue of lies so the general address of "the right honourable" is wholly inappropriate. Just referring to them as "the MP for" would be correct.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Not all MPs are entitled to use the title "Right honourable". This is a title that may be used by members of the Privy Council. You can find out more about the Privy Council here:

http://privycouncil.independent.gov.uk/

Not all members of the Privy Council are MPs.

During debates, MPs refer to other MPs (if they are not members of the Privy Council) as "the honourable gentlement/lady" or "my honourable friend".

You could start a new petition calling for all MPs to be known as "the MP for" instead.
