Petition Action

Bring in tougher laws as a preventative measure against false rape accusations

Petition Details

Too many people get away with lying about being raped in the UK. We need to bring in stricter legislation to prevent them getting away with it. A woman can lie about being raped, ruin a man's reputation, and walk away with no consequences, this needs to end!

Additional Information

People who lie about being raped should face the same consequences that their alleged rapist would have, if not found innocent. It can ruin a person's life as their name will potentially always be blackened, despite the fact they they're completely innocent! Imagine if your son, brother or partner/spouse were falsely accused of rape, their life would be destroyed. Please sign this petition to help protect them in the future, as this can happen to ANYONE!

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Your petition asks for the law to be changed to punish people who make false accusations of rape.

Making a false allegation of a crime may already in some circumstances lead to a jail sentence - for example, if someone is found guilty of perverting the course of justice. In other cases, people who are accused of making false accusations may be prosecuted for wasting police time.

It is not therefore clear to us how you would like the law to be changed. You could start a new petition asking for a specific change to the law.

You may find this guidance from the Crown Prosecution Service helpful:
