We demand reform to the honours system to re-establish public trust
Honours nominations by the Prime Minister which are viewed as rewarding (i) financial donations to his/her party or (ii) private service to the Prime Minister and his/her close associates are corrosive of public trust in the political system.
We demand reform of the honours system so that it reflects genuine public service and outstanding achievement as it is meant to do. The current honours committee structure is clearly not robust enough to achieve this. We demand democratic accountability of honours recommendations by the Prime Minister to be strengthened such that they can be scrutinised and/or blocked by Members of Parliament.
