Introduce disability awareness as a topic in all schools as part of PSHE.
As a mother to four SEN kids, an all too common problem has occured with other children, young people and parents in today's soceity, as they do not have the knowledge, understanding and positive attitude towards others with any kind of disability. Disability awareness should taught in all schools.
Raising disability awareness as part of PSHE in primary and secondary schools from Early Years, Key Stages 1, 2, 3 and 4 and delivering more disability awareness training across all teaching staff including support staff not only will improve teaching skills, it will help pupils challenge the attitudes, perceptions and expectations of disabled people and society as a whole in relation to a disability. Positive attitudes are the key to removing barriers for people with disabilities.
