Ban smoking in all public places in the United Kingdom
When a child sees an adult smoking in the street the message that child receives is "smoking is legal and it's ok to do it".
Smoking is the primary cause of preventable illness and premature death, accounting for approximately 96,000 deaths a year in the United Kingdom.
Research commissioned by ASH has shown that the total cost to society (in England) is approximately £13.9 billion a year. This includes the cost to the NHS of treating diseases caused by smoking in England which is approximately £2 billion a year. Other costs include:
• loss in productivity due to premature deaths (£4bn)
• smoking-related sick days (£979m)
• social care costs of older smokers (£1.1bn)
