Petition Action

Should existing rights of UK citizens have primacy in adopting new legislation.

Petition Details

We, the undersigned, wish for Parliament to debate if the adoption, through a vote or otherwise and for whatever reason, of any legislation, however invoked, causing the reduction or loss of any rights currently held by every UK citizens may run contrary to precepts governing the UK Constitution.

Additional Information

All UK citizens have rights, acquired through legislation or birth. Our understanding is that it is the legal and moral duty of Parliament to safeguard these, especially so in the case of those below voting age where it holds a position of ultimate responsibility (HL Paper 144/HC 1016).
Moreover, if Parliament in acceding to the wishes of any part of society causes the curtailing or loss of some rights for all citizens, this would constitute an act of expediency rather than correct governance.
