Petition Action

Change classification of dogs to sentient beings.

Petition Details

Many of us have witnessed abuse of dogs. Be it neglect, or physical abuse from the keeper, or dogs wrongfully removed from their homes and treated as no more than a piece of furniture. Too often these offences are taken too lightly, people aren't being held accountable and they need to be.

Additional Information

By changing how the law views dogs, it would force the law to hold people who harm dogs accountable for their actions. Dogs would gain rights as living beings and no longer be subject to the same laws as an ananimate object. Dogs are our friends, our family. They have no voice and it is our responsibility to act on their behalf, and act now. By signing, you will make your voice heard for these loving, loyal animals. Harsher penalties for people who breed without bias, neglect, and abuse dogs.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The UK Government is currently a signatory to the Treaty of Amsterdam (June 1997) which recognises all animals as sentient creatures. Therefore this petition has been rejected as it not clear what more you want to government to do.

You may want to consider creating signing one the current petition calls for changes to animal welfare laws as it relates to dogs. For example:

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/162221
petition.parliament.uk/petitions/127446
petition.parliament.uk/petitions/163459

Alternatively if none of these petitions address your concerns you could create a new petition calling on the Government and/or Parliament to take a specific action that it has not already taken.
