Make cycle helmets compulsory
In 2014, 3514 cyclists were killed or seriously injured - a 40% rise in 5 years. Most cyclist casualties are adults, but 11% are children. Around 75% have head injuries. This petitions calls for a new law which forces all individuals to wear a helmet, starting with children below the age of 16.
Many countries have made helmets compulsory for adults or children or both. The New Zealand Ministry of Transport argues that helmets reduce the risk of brain injury by up to 88%. Olympic rower James Cracknell told the Independent on Sunday he could have died without a helmet. The Union Cycliste Internationale forces their riders to wear helmets. And the international Cochran review of 1999, showed huge reductions to the risk of head, brain and severe brain injury when cyclists wear a helmet.
