Require all HGVs / large vehicles to be fitted with autonomous emergency brakes.
HGV accidents are increasing. For example, Thames Valley Police have just released a harrowing video showing the fatal smash on the A34 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkjRvsT8f5k) caused by human error. This crash could have avoided if the truck had an autonomous emergency braking system (AEBS).
Humans are subject to fatigue, 'highway hypnosis', medical problems, distractions etc. AEBS and other autonomous safety devices are not subject to any of these problems.
According to Campaign For Better Transport:
More than half (52%) of fatal accidents on motorways involve HGVs but only 10% of motorway vehicles are HGVs.
HGVs are involved in 1 in 5 fatal crashes on A roads, getting worse each year.
HGVs are 5x more likely to be in a fatal crash on minor roads.
