Petition Action

Stop housing developers inflating ground rent making houses worthless

Petition Details

Ground rent charges are swamping new home buyers as they are caught out by leases with inflating ground rent charges. The already high charges double every 10 years to over £8000 per year. This effectively means once you have paid off your mortgage you are still paying costs equivalent to rent.

Additional Information

The exorbitant charges make houses worthless and unsaleable. This is not pointed out by the solicitors suggested by the developers who are supposed to be acting in your best interest. The developers then sell the leasehold to a third party to absolve them from responsibility.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action. You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.

You could ask Parliament to change the law, to cap increases on ground rent charges, if that's what you would like to happen.
