Demand routine testing for dangerous and fatal infections during pregnancy
In 2014, I was pregnant with my daughter. I visited my doctor complaining of abdominal pain and was not testing for anything. A few weeks later I was rushed to hospital in preterm labour, and my baby was delivered at 20 weeks. She survived only 2 hours. I had chorioamnionitis that went untreated.
•25% of preterm labours are due to emergency events, including undiagnosed infections
•These infections can be detected with examinations, urine cultures, vaginal/rectal swabs and blood tests
•If left undetected can cause inflammation of the fetal membranes/amniotic sac, leading a medical emergency named chorioamnionitis
•Can trigger preterm contractions, premature rupture of membranes, placental abruption and imminent delivery
•Delivery prior to 24 weeks is fatal, and otherwise dangerous
