Do not cut the number of visas for international students coming to the UK.
The Home office is considering plans to cut the number of visas granted to overseas students by nearly half, slashing the current 300,000 to 170,000 per year.
Besides denying students an opportunity to study at UK universities, this move will cost the UK economy (Universities UK puts non-EU student contributions to UK GDP at £9b in 2014-15). In short this is a lose-lose measure. Students lose out. The UK loses out. And the government gains nothing substantive in its efforts to reach Conservative manifesto migration targets.
