More democracy at work: let workers elect representatives to company boards
The Prime Minister announced her support for a change in company law to allow workers to elect representatives to sit on company boards.
But this welcome proposal for corporate governance reform has been watered down.
This is unacceptable - democratic representation should not be voluntary.
“If I’m prime minister ... we’re going to have not just consumers represented on
company boards, but workers as well.” - Theresa May, 11th July 2016
Worker representation is not a replacement for existing agreements between companies and trade unions. Nor is it a means of reducing the independence unions.
The TUC has published a report on how the policy could be implemented: https://www.tuc.org.uk/economic-issues/corporate-governance/workplace-issues/all-aboard-making-worker-representation
