Make lessons in financial literacy a statutory element of the curriculum
Young people leave school unprepared for managing their own finances responsibly. The government should require schools to educate pupils in financial literacy. This would prepare people for adult life, in particular managing personal and family finances, including mortgages, loans and credit cards.
The average total debt per household – including mortgages – was £55,982 in November 2016. Young people are leaving full time education with little or no understanding of credit or debit cards, loans and mortgages.
This petition was devised by a Politics group in an English secondary school.
