Force large landowners to increase afforestation to stop flooding downstream
The risk of flooding in lowland areas is currently been increased by large landowners increasing the level of drainage and not increasing the percentage of land covered by woodland. Increases in woodland would both reduce the speed and water levels reaching watercourses and preventing flooding.
Flooding in low lying areas is caused by four main factors: precipitation levels, level of development on floodplains, speed of water reaching local watercourses and amount reaching watercourses. This petition is trying to encourage legislation in two of these four factors: speed and amount of water reaching local watercourses. Watersheds need vast increases in woodland to slow down water speeds through the leaves of trees, soil saturation and vegetation using water resources.
