Petition Action

Debate the motion that Government petitions create the "illusion of democracy"

Petition Details

Petitions which have polled the most signatures have been refused for debate.

It is postulated that the petition system is merely there as a "venting" system to create the "illusion of democracy" and thus "neuter the will of the people".

We ask Parliament to debate the data.

Additional Information

See data from recent petitions - Trump 1.8million, Brexit 4 million and so on

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We could accept a petition calling for the House of Commons to debate whether petitions on this site create the "illusion of democracy".

However, it is not true that the petitions with the highest numbers of signatures have not been debated. Both of the petitions you mention have been debated, so it's not clear how you would like the system to change.

You can find links to both debates on the petition pages:

petition.parliament.uk/petitions/131215 (EU referendum)
