Enforce a fine for patients who do not attend (DNA) NHS hospital appointments.
DNAs:
- Cost the NHS an estimated £225 million in 2012 to 2013*
- Are an inefficient use of staff
- Result in extended waiting times
- Occurred in around 5.6 million (9% of the total) NHS outpatient appointments in England between 2014 to 2015**
(See additional details for sources * and **)
Appointments where a patient does not show or provide prior notice are regarded as DNA (did not attend) appointments.
