Update the law to protect those with disabling mental illnesses.
The disability discrimination act does not adequately cover those suffering mental illnesses, and does not require organisations to provide the assistance needed by sufferers to achieve levels of accessibility and equality enjoyed by other members of society. It is also too easily circumvented.
Mental illness sufferers
- are 'let go' by employers due to ill health (disability), even while actively seeking help
- have difficulty finding insurance, leaving families unprotected when sufferers are already ill, often due to trauma/genetics
- are stigmatised and undervalued
- have the benefit application system weighted against them
- are prone to social exclusion as products/services are not accessible to them
- are less able to contest discrimination due to the nature of illness
