Petition Action

Amend fixed term parliament act to account for changes of Prime Minister.

Petition Details

3 times in the past 40 years the Prime Minister has changed without an election. The Fixed Term Parliament Act should include provision that a vote should be held within a year of a change in Prime Minister so that if the House of Commons thinks the government needs a new mandate it can get one.

Additional Information

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/election_2010/8641552.stm In 2010 David Cameron announced that an unelected Prime Minister should have to call a new election within 6 months of taking office.

Since Theresa May has become PM proposals that weren't in the 2015 Conservative manifesto have been put forward.

The vote to hold a general election requires a two thirds majority to pass. It's not unreasonable within 12 months the Commons should decide if a new mandate is required or not.
