Fine those who need medical treatment due to excessive alcohol consumption.
Alcohol-related admissions put A&E departments under severe pressure.
Recent estimates have suggested that up to 3 in every 10 patients attending A&E in the UK are there because of alcohol – Around 7 in 10 A&E admissions between midnight and 5am at weekends are thought to be linked to alcohol.
The number of alcohol-related hospital admissions in the UK has risen 115% in the past 10 years - Alcohol is estimated to cost the NHS around £3.5bn per year, which amounts to £120 for every taxpayer. Overall, treating alcohol-related conditions costs the NHS about 3.6% of its annual budget.
Not only are drunken patients some of the most time consuming, the verbal and physical abuse many A&E staff face from drunken patients could be reduced and possibly avoided by enforcing fines.
