Petition Action

Explain why you did not attempt to learn from 1975 referendum for the 2016 vote

Petition Details

In the 1975 EEC membership referendum, everyone was sent a detailed booklet on why they should vote Yes, and one on why they should vote No (with each clearly stating that it was issued by the campaign in question, not by the Government).

Additional Information

Having detailed material from both sides of the campaign, issued by the relevant organisations independently of the Government, would have enabled voters to consider carefully all the issues involved and make a properly informed decision, without being made to feel that the Government was trying to pressure them into voting one way or the other.

Everyone was sent a pamphlet from the Electoral Commission containing one page from each campaign, but this was not enough to cover all the issues.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

You could start a new petition explaining clearly what you would like the Government or Parliament to do.
