Petition Action

Give votes urgently to the 1½ million 16- and 17-year olds

Petition Details

1½ million 16- & 17-year olds were barred from the recent referendum and election.
Such youths vote in Scottish elections, in Jersey, Guernsey, Austria, Argentina... Labour & LibDem policy gives them votes.
Enfranchise them immediately so that all future voting may be more fairly representative.

Additional Information

Shouldn't young people vote on their future?

Petition https://petition.parliament.uk/archived/petitions/166615 called for votes for 5½ million people barred from the Brexit referendum. Because the three excluded groups did not all receive support, the petition is relaunched as three separate ones. The issue is urgent because with an unstable Government a new election or referendum may occur at any moment.

Numbers come from 2014-15 ONS and UN data. For details visit http://bit.ly/2cn7hrO

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

We're not sure exactly what you'd like the Government or Parliament to do.

You could start a new petition calling for the UK voting age to be lowered to 16 in general elections and referendums, if that's what you would like to happen.
