Stop BBC & ClassicFm colluding, thus enabling ClassicFM to operate as a monopoly

Petition Details

The BBC has an unwritten agreement with ClassicFM, not to encroach upon the playing of its popular classical music catalogue,so ClassicFM operates in a monopoly-and yet in 100yrs, the BBC hasn't provided a popular classic music station of its own(R3 is specialised); the government must intervene.

Additional Information

This article (amongst others) demonstrates this unwritten agreement: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/media/12128477/Classic-FM-boss-tells-patronising-Radio-3-boss-to-stop-aping-his-station.html

A recent survey showed that >28% of the British population would tune in regularly to a (24/7, advert free) BBC popular classical music station dedicated to playing full symphonies, concertos & sonatas, etc. - if one was provided. The BBC should act. Young people too are being neglected in this omission.

This petition was rejected

The Government e-Petitions Team gave the following reason:

The BBC is an independent body governed by a Royal Charter. Under the terms of that Charter, the BBC is operationally and editorially independent of government and there is no provision for the government to intervene in the BBC’s day-to-day operations.
